ITV and Channel 5 research

ITV: ITV is a commercial television channel in the UK. It operates in England, Wales, Scotland, The Isle of Man and The Channel Islands. From 2001 to 2013 it was called ITV1. It is the biggest and most popular commercial TV channel in the UK. Annually, ITV invests around £1,000,000,000 in content. According to ITV's website, ITV is: the home of high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news, both national, and regional. ITV has the largest share of the UK TV advertising market with 47.6%. It has 21.7% share of viewing for the ITV family, and ITV hub has 21,000,000 registered users. ITV produced over 8,400 hours of original content in 2017. On ITV's website there is a commissioning section where it says what kind of programmes they are looking for. In terms of factual programmes they are looking for something authentic, and that you should consider territory that has been done befor...

Research on the target audience.

Image
The target audience is 18-35 'millennials'. Millennials are a generational demographic cohort. There is no precise date for when the cohort starts or ends but a millennial will typically be someone who was born in the early 1980's to the early 2000's. This is why the target audience is 18-35, as there is no exact age of what a millennial should be. There is some variation, but a millennial is typically associated with an increased use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies. Surveys of political attitudes of millennials in the UK have shown that they have increasingly socially liberal views. They are likely to have a bigger emphasis on political correctness than older generations. Economic prospects for many millennials have been damaged by the global financial crisis in the 2000's. Millennials are likely to consume TV on many different devices, for example on mobile phones, or laptops or traditional televisions. Mille...

Initial response to brief.

Image
In response to the brief I have began to research for my work. The first research was studying TV listings for ITV and Channel 5 and seeing what kinds of programmes are shown on these channels. I have looked at some potential options that are factual and fictional. ITV has some soap opera shows such as Coronation street, and Emmerdale so a soap opera could be a good option for a fictional show. Channel 5 also runs the soap opera Neighbours, so these type of shows seem to appeal to the target audience. ITV also has some daytime talk shows such as Loose women and The Jeremy Kyle show. This type of show could be a potential non-fiction option as they are clearly fairly popular shows. There are also game shows such as The Chase and Tipping Point that are broadcast. They are popular and appeal to the target audience, however it may be hard to fit a game show into the brief as it may be hard to include a point of significant conflict for example. ITV and Channel 5 also broadcast lots of doc...

Blog introduction.

This blog is about my A level media coursework at Hills Road Sixth Form College. For my coursework I am required to create an individual cross-media production for the following brief:  Brief 1- Television, a cross-media production for a new television in a factual or fictional genre (or sub-genre/hybrid) of your choice. Create an audio-visual sequence from a television programme and associated print materials to promote the same programme. The cross-media production is for a mainstream broadcaster (either ITV or Channel 5) targeting an audience of 18-35 year old 'millennials'.
