ITV and Channel 5 research

ITV:

ITV is a commercial television channel in the UK. It operates in England, Wales, Scotland, The Isle of Man and The Channel Islands. From 2001 to 2013 it was called ITV1. It is the biggest and most popular commercial TV channel in the UK. Annually, ITV invests around £1,000,000,000 in content. According to ITV's website, ITV is: the home of high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news, both national, and regional. ITV has the largest share of the UK TV advertising market with 47.6%. It has 21.7% share of viewing for the ITV family, and ITV hub has 21,000,000 registered users. ITV produced over 8,400 hours of original content in 2017. On ITV's website there is a commissioning section where it says what kind of programmes they are looking for. In terms of factual programmes they are looking for something authentic, and that you should consider territory that has been done before but you should consider how you can update it and make it un-missable. They say that "Factual is a crowded field and being stand-out is more important than ever." They also say that they want a returnable series because their audience enjoys coming back to things they like and so that they can market a brand better. ITV's social partnership is also something that is taken seriously, and that they want a programme that reflects the diverse nature of their audience in terms of background, culture and disabilities both on and off screen. Therefore they want their programmes to be populated with people from a wide range of ethnic and class backgrounds. Pre-watershed breaks down into three separate territories:
· Softer 30’ series propositions at 8pm on Mondays and Fridays
· Greater ambition and an emphasis on entertainment values at 8.30pm on a Thursday
· 60’ series that can be formatted or ob docs at 8pm on Tuesdays.

It then says that their main game is for 9pm midweek. That is where ITV is looking for shows that they can re-comission.

In terms of drama, ITV is looking for ideas that can deliver the highest quality popular mainstream drama to the largest audience. They also say that no subject is off limits. However, they also say "An ITV drama is never cynical and is always entertaining, and even in the darkest stories we seek the hope of redemption. We don’t do black comedy or satire, and we can’t be bleak." Returnable series are their priority. They also say that ideas that are more comedy-drama and younger-skewing can find their place on ITV2.

Channel 5:

Channel 5 is a British commercial television network that was launched in 1997. It is a general entertainment channel that shows both internationally commissioned programmes, and foreign programmes. Channel 5 has the smallest audience share of the main terrestrial channels in the UK. On their website, the Director of programming says: "We particularly like factual shows – Specialist Factual, Documentaries and Factual Entertainment. These can be poppy, tabloid type shows or serious pieces, there’s room for all tones and textures. But they need to have a good, grabby title. We are not really in the market for Comedy or Drama at the moment but that will hopefully change moving forward. We are also hoping to commission more Features and Lifestyle further down the line but it’s hard to get those kind of shows away at the moment." In terms of factual, Channel 5 is looking for: Broad, robust documentary series for 9pm, and a returnable 8pm series that reflects who we are and how we live, 10pm entertaining documentary series or one-offs.
