Magazine research

Elle:

Elle is a lifestyle magazine that focuses on celebrities, fashion, and beauty. It is aimed at women, probably in the same age range as my production which is 18-35 year old 'millennials'. The front cover has a large image of Selena Gomez, with the magazine's name and also 'Go Glam' in huge yellow writing. Then there is 'Fashion, big, bad & bougie- bags and shoes get bold', 'Beauty- big hair is back', and 'How to wear the leather dress' in smaller white writing. These are all eye-catching and the subjects appeal to the target audience and hooks them in. After opening the magazine there are about 30 pages of advertisements for perfume and fashion designers such as Louis Vitton and Fendi, and also a watch advertisement for Tag Huer. This shows that this magazine is popular amongst the target audience as huge and successful brands are using it to try and sell their products, and also that this magazine is trying to sell the things it is about. Then there is a small article about what this months magazine is about, and then more adverts on every other page to go along with an article. There are lifestyle sections such as '10 things to do this month'. There are fashion sections that while don't have explicit advertising in them, they have a 'what to buy section' with lots of items of clothing with their prices, further encouraging readers to buy more. Almost every article features lots of images, sometimes they are even more prominent than the text. There aren't that many double page spreads in the magazine as a lot of the time every other page is taken up by an advertisement. There is one for the interview with Selena Gomez. One page is completely taken up with a photo of her, and then the other page is completely taken up with text which is her interview. This is similar to the double page spread I will produce, because I think I will also do an interview which will be with one of the main characters from my TV show. One interesting quote is taken from the text and put in larger writing in the middle of the page. Quotes are also included on the picture. The back cover of the magazine is also an advert.

What's on TV:
This isn't a lifestyle magazine, it is a TV listings magazine however my show would fit in with the style of this magazine with the font's and images it uses.

Cosmopolitan:
Cosmopolitan is a lifestyle magazine similar to Elle, however it is less focused on fashion and celebrities and more on real people. However, there is still a celebrity on the cover to draw people in. There isn't a main headline, but around the cover in equal size text it says: 'Total Chic- The influencers' high-street edit.', 'The other Lover- why I vetted my wife's affair.', 'They turned on me- The rape survivor #MeToo disowned.', 'Is success an illness?- The high-flyers killing it at work.', 'The male model & the nerd- Life with the UK's most eligible man.' and 'A supermodel roars- Tess Holliday wants the haters to kiss her ass.' There is also a fairy large circle saying 'The No.1 women's glossy magazine' and the price £2. It is fairly cheap and this will help to persuade people looking at the cover to buy it. Like Elle, there are lots of advertisements in the magazine, including the first few pages that are all adverts, and then throughout most of the magazine, every other page is an advert. There are many articles about beauty and fashion, and the adverts are mostly for clothes and beauty products so that is probably why they are placed next to articles, to encourage more spending after reading about these sort of products. There is a big double page spread which is portrait rather than landscape with a huge picture of a woman exercising spanning both pages with detailed text boxes around her telling the reader how to do the exercises that the woman is doing. This appeals to the target audience that is probably 18-35 year old 'millennials' that are female. Younger people are more active and focused on doing exercise so this appeals to the target audience. The whole magazine is appealing to the interests of the target audience.
